The University of Nairobi (UoN) has appointed Prof. Ayub N. Gitau as its 9th Vice-Chancellor following the exit of Prof. Stephen Kiama from the country’s oldest public university.

In a statement released after a special council sitting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, the University Council also announced the appointment of Prof. Josiah O. Aduda as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.

Council Chair Chacha Nyaogotti confirmed the appointments, expressing confidence in the new leadership team’s ability to steer the institution toward academic excellence and innovation.

Prof. Gitau assumes office at a critical time when the university is grappling with financial and administrative challenges. His leadership is expected to guide UoN through reforms aimed at strengthening governance and restoring stability.

Meanwhile, Prof. Aduda will oversee the Finance, Planning and Development docket, where he is tasked with driving key reforms to improve the university’s financial health and support its long-term strategic growth.

The council also commended Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson for her service as Acting Vice-Chancellor during the transition period, acknowledging her role in maintaining stability at the institution.

The University of Nairobi remains one of the region’s leading institutions of higher learning, and the new appointments signal a renewed focus on strengthening its academic standing and operational efficiency.
