Nairobi can be overwhelming. The traffic, the noise, the pace — sometimes you just need to get out. The good news is that Kenya's capital sits at the centre of one of the world's great landscapes, and some of the country's most spectacular scenery is within easy reach of a weekend escape.

1. Lake Naivasha — From KSh 4,500

Just 90km from Nairobi, Lake Naivasha is Kenya's freshwater jewel. Camp at Crayfish Camp or Fisherman's Camp for as little as KSh 1,500 per night, take a boat out to see hippos and fish eagles, and cycle through the Hells Gate gorge the following morning. Total weekend budget including transport and food: under KSh 6,000.

2. Thika — From KSh 2,000

Often overlooked, Thika offers the Blue Posts Hotel waterfall, the Chania Falls, and the agricultural landscapes that inspired Elspeth Huxley's "The Flame Trees of Thika." A day trip costs next to nothing.

3. Ngong Hills — From KSh 1,500

The dramatic Ngong Hills ridge, just 20km from the CBD, offers stunning views over the Rift Valley and the Maasai Mara plains. A matatu to Ngong town and a short hike gets you there for almost nothing.

4. Ol Pejeta Conservancy — From KSh 8,000

The northern boundary of the Central Highlands, Ol Pejeta is home to the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Game drives at sunrise, community guesthouse accommodation, and chimpanzee sanctuary access can all be arranged for around KSh 8,000 all in.

5. Amboseli Day Trip — From KSh 9,500

With budget safari operators now offering shared day trips from Nairobi to Amboseli for around KSh 9,500 including park fees and transport, the sight of elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro has never been more accessible.
