Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has dismissed reports claiming Lamu has already been picked as the location for the proposed Ksh2.2 trillion East African oil refinery.
Speaking on Tuesday, July 28 during a stakeholder meeting at his Karen home in Nairobi, Kindiki said feasibility studies are still ongoing to identify the best site for the project.
He explained that the government is currently reviewing several technical and scientific factors before making a final decision. Lamu is just one of the areas under consideration.
“Lamu is one of the places proposed for this project. Right now we are conducting feasibility studies to determine if it is suitable for the oil refinery. That process is still ongoing,” Kindiki said.
The DP noted that assessments include port infrastructure, refinery setup, and petrochemical factors, adding that there are “many moving parts” the government is working to align.
His remarks mean the final location for the mega energy project has not yet been decided, despite Lamu receiving a lot of attention as a likely host.
